Year 1 & 2 Homework

09 November 2018

Posted on Friday 09 November 2018 by Mr Roundtree

This week’s homework is talk time and is due on Thursday 15 November.

This half term, our Christian value is perseverance.

Discuss this scenario with your family:

One day, Sam’s teacher set his class a challenge. The challenge was to learn to count in 3s and recite it to the teacher next week. Sam always found maths challenging but wanted to give it his best go. All week, Sam practised and practised and practised because it wasn’t an easy challenge. The next week came and, after much practice, Sam managed to count in 3s. He excitedly told his best friend Lucy. Lucy laughed and showed Sam her arm – all up her arm were the numbers to count in 3s ready to recite to the teacher.

  • Who showed perseverance in this scenario?
  • Was it ok for Lucy to write the answers on her arm?
  • How would you show perseverance when set a difficult challenge?

This week, the whole school has the same Talk Time homework. In preparation for the upcoming School Council elections, children should complete one of the following tasks:

  • I can prepare a speech (School Council elections).
  • I know the importance of voting.

It’s time for children to consider if they would like to stand for election for our new School Council.  With two representatives from each year group, chosen democratically by their peers, all children are encouraged to take an active part in pupil voice.

Elections for our new school council will take place on Thursday 25 October with our polling station and ballot boxes at the ready.  Candidates will have the opportunity to give their election speech to their class on Wednesday 24 October or Thursday 25 October.

What makes a good school councillor has been considered by our current school council.

  • ‘use all the 8 Rs for learning’
  • ‘be respectful’
  • ‘help others’
  • ‘be a good speaker and listener (to members of your class and in the meetings)’
  • ‘tell the truth’
  • ‘be confident with your ideas’
  • ‘accept the views of others even if you don’t agree’
  • ‘be friendly and approachable’
  • ‘make good choices in class and around school’

Hints for your speech include:

  • What skills and abilities would a good school councillor have?
  • What are you particularly good at that would help you to be a great school councillor?
  • What do you think would make the school better?
  • What could you do that people would really like?
  • Think of things that are realistic, maybe that you could do yourself, rather than having to ask other people to do

Thank you to our current school councillors for all their ideas and contributions.  We hope you have enjoyed this role and responsibility.  You’re welcome to stand again for election.

Good luck to all children who decide to stand in the elections.

If you choose not to stand in the election, you should consider the importance of voting.

This week’s homework is creative and is due on Thursday 18 October.

I can show what a home is.

This half term, our topic is Time Travel. We have looked at what is old and new (in relation to toys) and placed toys in chronological order. We have now moved onto looking at homes and how these have changed over the years – all the way from Celtic home to modern homes. Last week, we took a trip around Wetherby looking at all the different houses around.

For this homework, we would like you to show what a home is. This can be presented in any creative way the children wish. They could talk about:

What is important about a home?

What do homes look like?

What did homes look like in the past?

This week’s homework is a practice makes perfect and is due in on Thursday 11 October.

Year 1:

This week we have been learning more about numbers. We have been looking at ordinal numbers – know what 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc is.

Year 2:

We have been learning to count in multiples of 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. When we are counting in 10s, we can count from any number – e.g. starting on 4, 2, 7.

This week the whole school has the same Talk Time homework which should be completed by Thursday 04 October.

If I could travel in time, who would I take with me and why?

This homework, which links to our current big topic (Time Travel), is a chance for children to think about who is important to them and why. There are many factors which may influence your child’s decision:

  • What makes a good travel companion?
  • Are there any skills that would help during time travel?
  • Who do they enjoy spending time with and why?
  • Do they choose someone they know or someone they know of?

Children should discuss this with someone at home and be ready to discuss their viewpoint as part of our weekly homework review next week.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Thursday 27 September.

This half term, our Christian value is friendship. In school and in collective worship, we’ve been looking at what makes a good friend and examples of being a good friend from the Bible. With your family, discuss the following questions and be prepared to talk about your answers on Friday 28 September – make notes (or ask an adult) in your homework book to help you.

What qualities do you look for in a friend?

There’s an old saying that goes, “In order to have good friends, you have to be a good friend.” What does that mean? Do you think it’s true? Why? What are the benefits of having friends who are different from us?

This week the whole school has the same Practice Makes Perfect homework which should be completed by Thursday 20 September.

I know some Where in the World facts.

This homework, which links to our current mini-topic (Where in the World), is a chance for children to show off their geographical knowledge. Children should learn and remember (one of our 8Rs for learning) some facts about the world that they find interesting. There are many things children could learn about:

  • the seven continents
  • capital cities
  • names of the oceans
  • the countries of the UK, Europe or the world
  • the population of some countries
  • interesting facts about a place they find interesting or have been
  • how to say a common word or phrase in several languages (for example, hello!)
  • and, of course, there are many more facts children could find out and learn

This homework should be evidenced in homework books with children ready (another of our 8Rs for learning) to show off their new-found geographical knowledge as part of our weekly homework review next week.

This week’s homework is creative. It’s due in on Thursday 13 September.

I can show what I know about a country.

We’re starting our term with a mini-topic of “Where in the World?”. We’ve begun by looking at the UK and the four countries that make it up. This week’s homework is to show what they know about a country – this can be any country – even England if they want.

Your child could:

  • produce a spider diagram of information
  • draw pictures with labels
  • write a fact file
  • create a promotional leaflet for a tourism brochure
  • design a homepage for a website about the country

…or think of another creative way of presenting their information.

This week’s homework is practice makes perfect and is due on Thursday 05 July.

I can write a set of instructions.

This week is sports week and we are looking at all of the ways we can be healthy. One of those ways is moving. Children are recommended to do 60 minutes of exercise a day – 30 minutes in school and 30 minutes at home.

Your homework is to write a set of instructions for a sport/game of your choice. You can choose any sport or game as long as it’s active. Such as, football, cricket, netball, tig, stuck in the mud or sharks and fishes.

Don’t forget, instructions need a title, a ‘what you need’ section and a ‘what to do’ section.

Focus: Talk time

‘Are footballers good role-models and are they honest?’

World cup fever has gripped the nation. So for homework discuss this question with your family. You may wish to record some of the responses in your book.

Be ready to have a class discussion and give your opinion next week.
