Focus : families of words

Families of words can be created by taking a root word – basically the simplest form of a word and adding other prefixes and suffixes. For example, agree is a root word and words in the family could be disagree, agreement, agreeable etc.

Chose two of the following words and create a word family of your own.

Focus : the ‘ee’ sound in different way

This week, we’ve been looking at how the long ‘ee’ sound can be written with quite a few different graphemes (letters).

Your child has a sheet with all the different ways in your book. For each different grapheme, find three words to go with it. Then write down five sentences using your choice of the words.

Focus : adding the –ly suffix

There are different ways to add –ly to a word to change its meaning. Add the –ly suffix to each of the following words and then practise them for a spelling test next week. Remember, for some of them, the spelling will change – you may have to drop the last letter…

Since the start of the year we have learnt a huge variety of prefixes and suffixes and how they can change a word. Your task is to create a word family for each of the following words.
For example: interest: interesting, disinterested, interestingly etc.

Remember, for some words the spelling changes when you add a suffix.
