National Poetry Day – Wonder

Thursday 01 October 2026

We had a wonderful time celebrating National Poetry Day! This year’s theme was ‘Wonder’, which gave us lots of opportunities to think, talk, perform and reflect.

We started our celebrations by joining a live National Poetry Day assembly featuring one of our favourite poets, Michael Rosen. It was brilliant to hear poetry being shared and performed and to think about how poets use words to make us laugh, imagine and wonder.

We also enjoyed reading and performing ‘Woodlice’ by Simon Mole. We thought carefully about how we could use our voices, expressions and actions to bring the poem to life.

The theme of ‘Wonder’ linked perfectly with our learning about spirituality. We talked about how spirituality can be about experiencing moments of awe and wonder. These are those special ‘wow moments’ that make us stop, notice, think and feel amazed by or connected to something around us.

We reflected on how poetry can help us to pause, notice and wonder. A poem might make us think about our own feelings, connect with other people or notice something amazing in the world around us.

The children contributed their own ‘Wonder is…’ statements.

Help at home by finding a poem to enjoy together? Talk about what made you pause, think or wonder.
