We’re starting our Year 4 maths learning by recapping column addition.

Before using equipment to model the maths, the children enjoyed exploring the Base 10.

To make sure we really understood the procedure of column addition, we worked with a partner to ‘build’ the addition calculation and link it to the column addition.

We reminded ourselves we always start on the right (in the ones column) and that we have to make sure that the numbers are in the correct place value column.

Help at home:  Build confidence by practising column addition either on paper or using an online game such as Transum column addition games (Y4 is up to level 6.)

Our Living and Learning statement this week is I follow the school rules. We’ve explored our three school rules:

• We’re ready
• We’re respectful
• We’re safe

We’ve thought about what these rules look like, sound like and feel like in different parts of our school day, from lining up and moving around school safely to listening carefully, being kind and working hard in lessons.

We’ve been practising “3, 2, 1 stop” so we can all quickly show:

• silent voices
• positive body language
• focus on the speaker

Being able to stop what we are doing and be ready for our learning quickly is great because it means we can make the most of our learning time. What a jam-packed year of learning and fun we’re going to have!

Help at home: Talk to your child about our three school rules. Can they explain what being ready, respectful and safe looks like at home or when you’re out and about?

Y4 have come back to school ready to learn!

We’ve had such a fantastic start to the term with children showing great behaviour for learning and a can-do attitude to their work. Whether your child has received a certificate in Celebration Assembly, a “perfect presentation” stamp in their book, a sticker in their Reading Record, dojos for class work or a phone call home, everyone should be celebrating a great start to this year.

Help at home – ask your child what they are proud of achieving this week and what they would like to achieve next week.

We’ve been back for 3 days but it feels like we’ve been together so much longer! What a great start we’ve had to the new year!

We’ve got some very exciting learning ahead of us including Ancient Greece in History and grouping animals in Science.

Some key information:

• In Y4, our PE days are Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure earrings are taken out before school.
• This half term, Y4 will be doing Forest School on a Friday. (See letter for further details of what to bring.)
• We visit the library and celebrate our Reading Records every Friday so please have your library book and Reading Record in school every week on this day.
• Spelling tests will be on a Friday – we’ve listened to your feedback and hope that sending specific words to practise will make spelling homework easier.

Year 4 have proudly completed their Design and Technology project by designing and making their own fabric pouches. Throughout the project, the children  practised sewing techniques and carefully planned their designs to create a pouch for storing a special item of their choice. They showed fantastic creativity, resilience and attention to detail while learning valuable practical skills. Every finished pouch was unique and reflected the pupils’ thoughtful ideas and hard work.

This week our living and learning statement has been ‘I can say one good thing about myself.’

It has been lovely hearing the children be proud of themselves for a wide range of reasons.

Year 4 have really enjoyed their Going for Gold Party celebrating all the effort they put in to learning their times tables. Thank you for all of your support!

We had so many books competing in our Book Wars this week that there was a book that everyone wanted to try!

Graphic Novels are still a firm favourite but it was lovely to hear how many children are trying different books by the author of our class novel, Hannah Gold. As well as Turtle Moon (by Hannah Gold) there were other animal-themed books such as Paws and Whiskers (by Jacqueline Wilson) and a Bear Grylls novel.

Escape Room by Christopher Edge now has a waiting list and lots of children were interested in the non-fiction book about the human body that Isabella brought  from home.
