Focus : ay, a-e, ey, eigh

This week we have been learning words which use the ‘ay’ sound. There are a quite a few different ways to write this sound down. Your task is to find ten words which use the sound in any of the ways shown above and then write a sentence for each of them.

Challenge: Write a short story containing all the words you found.

Last week, we researched these prefixes and we then collected and discussed them as a class and came up with a list. Your task this week is to use the strategies that we use in class to learn this list of words for a test next week.

Focus : prefixes ir- il- im- in-

Adding these prefixes to a word changes its meaning to ‘not’ e.g active – inactive (not active)

Your task is to find as many words as you can which start with these prefixes. You must find a minimum of ten and write each one down three times to learn it.

Focus : adding -ly

Many – but not all – adverds end in –ly. For a spelling test next week learn these adverbs. Remember on some them you have to ‘drop the y for an i’.

Focus : -ed endings

Words use an apostrophe for possession when they own (possess) something in a sentence.

For example, I borrowed Joe’s pencil – The pencil belongs to Joe.

Add apostrophes for possession to these words and use them in a sentence.

Focus : families of words

Families of words can be created by taking a root word – basically the simplest form of a word and adding other prefixes and suffixes. For example, agree is a root word and words in the family could be disagree, agreement, agreeable etc.

Chose two of the following words and create a word family of your own.
