Thank you to the Y5/6 pupils who represented our school in the Remembrance Parade in Wetherby. It was lovely to see some of our children representing other organisations such as the Scouts and Brownies too.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Yesterday, we visited Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This was a great experience to see some fantastic sculptures in real-life. In our art topic, we are learning about Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth and it was fantastic to see their work and be able to compare and contrast their sculptures. It gave us an opportunity to take some inspiration for our own sculptures that we will make back in school too.
We are geographers!
This week, we’ve been learning how to use six-figure grid references in geography to help us locate places on maps efficiently. We started by using four-figure grid references and progressed onto using six-figure grid references. This was a challenge!
Science investigation
This week in science, we conducted a comparative test on different substances to see if they dissolved. We sorted the substances according to if they were soluble or insoluble. Throughout the investigation, we made observations so we could make a logical conclusion.

Peer mediator application
We are looking for Year 5 and 6 pupils who believe they would make a good peer mediator to help make St James’ C of E Primary School a happy and healthy place to achieve and believe, particularly during playtimes. The whole class have been given an application form and if they are interested in applying they need to complete the form by Friday 24 September.
Welcome back!
We are really looking forward to seeing all the children tomorrow and to find out what everyone has been doing over summer. It’s going to be a great year with lots of fun learning planned. Here are a few reminders and points about the year ahead:
- This year in Years 5/6, Mrs Valentine will be teaching the class as well as Miss Beatson and Mr Mills.
- We will be starting the school day at 8.50am again and finishing at 3.15pm.
- Our PE days will be on Tuesdays and Fridays so make sure PE kit is worn to school on these days.
- Please remember water bottles and coats.
- Please remember to name all school uniform.
See you all tomorrow!
PE days
We are going to continue wearing PE kit on PE days – this cuts down on lost property and saves learning time, so we’re going to continue this for at least next year as a longer term trial. On the days your child has PE, they should come to school in their school uniform PE kit. (Track-suit bottoms instead of shorts would be good on colder days. Footwear : black/brown/grey/white flat shoes which are safe to run around in.)
Footwear on PE days could be children’s ‘school shoes’ which are often a plain ‘trainer’ style anyway, if you want to avoid having to buy 2 pairs of shoes.
Here is a link to our uniform policy.
Please find below the days each class has allocated PE times, which will be taught outdoors, except in extreme weather.
Reception: Wednesdays
Y1/2: Tuesdays and Fridays
Y3/4: Tuesdays and Fridays
Y5/6: Tuesdays and Fridays
Animal Day
We’ve had lots of fun dressing up as different animals and animal prints today, all for a good cause. We’ve raised just under £70 for our school charity RSPCA. Thank you to everybody who contributed and to the JLT for organising.
Junior Warrior
Year 6 had a great time at Bramham Park completing the Junior Warrior challenge. It was an afternoon of fun, resilience, physical endurance and lots and lots of mud!!
Well done everyone!
DT: using a range of tools
Thank you to Mr Atkins who helped our class practise using different tools in preparation for making our vehicles for Eggy! We had a discussion on how to use the tools safely and carefully.
