A taste of judo…

On Tuesday morning, Year 1 and 2 enjoyed a fantastic trial judo session by Sportif Judo.

The children enjoyed learning some of the throws and hold downs taught by Glynn Fidgeon, who is a British and Commonwealth Medalist. Glynn was here to tell the children about the beginners Judo classes at St. Joseph’s Church Hall – have a look in your child’s bookbag for a leaflet with more information.

This week’s spelling work is a spelling task.

Year 1 have a phonics-based task where they need to identify the digraphs, which we have been learning this week in words.

Year 2 have a common exception words word search. Year 2s are expected to be able to read and write the common exception words by the end of Year 2 correctly. Have a look at the word mat to see all of the words – Year 2 have 14 of these to find in their word searches.

This week’s homework is a practice makes perfect. It’s due on Thursday 25 October.

Year 1

This week, we’ve been practising sorting out muddled up simple sentences. For example:

  • sing. like I to → I like to sing.

Year 1 children have mixed up sentences to sort and rewrite correctly. Don’t forget the capital letter and full stops!

Year 2

Year 2s are expected to know how to use an apostrophe to show letters are missing (contractions). For example:

  • can not → can’t
  • did not → didn’t

Year 2 have words to turn into contractions and then they need to write sentences using these contractions. Don’t forget the apostrophe (and, of course, the capital letter and full stops)!

St James’ is alive with the sound of music…

Music has been alive in Year 1 and 2 this week. We were lucky enough to have musicians from Wetherby Music Centre in school to run a workshop with the children. The children learned to keep a rhythm before beginning to learn the ukulele.  They’ve learned the names of the strings on the ukulele and have begun to learn to strum notes.

Wetherby Music Centre will be running a workshop with Year 1 and 2, weekly, for the next six weeks.

Some spellings support

Have you checked out out Learn More pages? They contain lots of tips and ideas to support your child at home.

In particular, look at the Help Your Child page. On here, we’ve just published a new guide to support your child with their spellings – it’s full of ideas to learn spellings in an active way. Encourage your child to try out the ideas. They won’t all suit, but some may end up being their favourite – and most effective – strategy!

Will Ted get wet?

Our class book, for the past two weeks, has been One Snowy Night. In this story, Percy the park keeper has to share his little hut with all the animals because their homes have been covered in snow.

Then, we found out poor old Ted’s home had been destroyed by the snow. We were concerned that Ted would get wet without a home so we set out on an investigation to find him a suitable material for his home.

We had a choice of paper, plastic, foil or fabric for his roof. The children made their predictions as to which would keep Ted dry and then we experimented.  The children were shocked to find that the paper kept Ted dry along with the foil and the plastic. The children’s prediction of fabric not working was correct and Ted ended up floating in water.

This week’s homework is creative. It’s due in on Thursday 18 January.

I can find different materials around the house.

Remember, all objects are made of a type of material (wood, glass, pottery, metal). You can show the materials you have found in whichever way you wish: writing a list with pictures, taking photographs and labelling them, drawing a poster or writing a description of what you have found.

For more information and games on materials, have a look at BBC Bitesize.

Playtimes and peers

This year at St James’ CE Primary, we’ve introduced peer mediators who help support the other children at playtimes. Here’s what some children have to say about peer mediators at our school:

‘When I was arguing with my friends, the peer mediators helped me sortit out and it came to a happy ending.’

‘When I don’t have anyone to play with, or when my friends are not playing a game properly, they come and sort it out and show us how to play it properly.’

‘Bailey and Alex helped me by telling people to stay away from me when I was upset. I said thank you to them.’

Well done and thank you to our peer mediators for carrying out this role so effectively and conscientiously.

This week’s homework is a spelling task.

Year 1 have a high frequency word list to practice spelling.

Year 2 have a list of irregular verbs to practice spelling. Can the children say a sentence using the irregular past tense verb?

All of the spellings tasks are focusing on the “Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check” method. The children will not be tested on spelling these words this week.
