05 January 2018

This week’s homework is practice makes perfect.

Year 1 need to complete the maths sheet on counting to 20 and reading and writing numbers to 20. Have a look at the game Blast Off to practise recognising numbers 11-20.

Year 2 need to complete the maths sheet on groups on repeating addition and multiplication. Have a look at the game Camel Times Tables to practise repeated addition as multiplication.

Homework is due on Thursday 11 January.

Attendance matters

Our attendance figures for the Autumn term are really encouraging. The average dropped a little over the course of the term, and we’ll continue to monitor this closely. However, it’s great to compare this year’s figure with last year’s…

  • Autumn last year 96.2%
  • Autumn this year 97.1%

Attending school as much as possible is something which we know makes a difference to your child’s learning. This improvement is great – well done and thank you to pupils and parents/carers. Can we keep it up in 2018??

The year groups averages are:

  • Reception – 96.0%
  • Y1 – 95.0%
  • Y2 – 97.9%
  • Y3 – 97.5%
  • Y4 – 98.8%
  • Y5 – 97.3%
  • Y6 – 97.6%

Well done to the even numbered year groups! Years 2, 4 and 6 all have attendance that’s especially high! (How odd that the odd numbers are lower!)

SATs in May

The Key Stage 2 tests (commonly called SATs) are in May:

  • Monday 14 May: English grammar, punctuation and spelling papers 1 and 2
  • Tuesday 15 May: English reading
  • Wednesday 16 May: Mathematics papers 1 and 2
  • Thursday 17 May: Mathematics paper 3

New style National Curriculum tests were introduced in 2016. This video lasts around five minutes and gives you a useful overview of the tests.

As always, speak with us if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

It’s Christmas!

We hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break and come back to school ready and fresh to learn on 02 January.

As it’s the holidays, there’s no homework this week but there’s a few things we think you should try and do over the festive break:

  • spend time with family
  • spend time with friends
  • play outside
  • throw a snowball
  • build a snowman
  • read a book, or two (or three)
  • do something nice for your parents or carers
  • spend some time relaxing and being mindful – remember our workshop?
  • investigate something you observe
  • be polite to everyone you meet
  • eat a few treats (and plenty of veggies!)
  • and, last but not least, have a generally awesome two weeks

St James’ School Choir

The school choir has been busy over the past week. On Friday afternoon, the choir entertained travellers at Moto Wetherby Services. The children sung their hearts out and raised £303.23. Well done, choir!

Further to their success on Friday, choir visited Ashfields nursing home in Wetherby. Their carol singing was appreciated by all of the residents and staff. The children behaved brilliantly and were a credit to our school.

08 December 2017

The homework this week is creative and is due on Thursday 14 December.

I can show what I know about a festival.

Around this time, many children in school will celebrate or will have celebrated a religious festival of some sort. This might be the Christian festival of Christmas (of course, celebrated by many non-Christians in the UK, too). It might also be the Sikh and Hindu festival Diwali, the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, and the Chinese New Year festival which is early in the new year.

There are lots of other festivals and celebrations which you and your child together might want to reflect on.  You can research more festivals.

We invite children to respond to the sentence above – they might include a recount (like a diary entry), pictures, an interview (perhaps in a script).  Your child might also choose to research a completely unknown festival, or they might even think about creating a brand new festival, one that everyone will celebrate.

01 December 2017

This week’s homework for Year 1,2 is a practice makes perfect and is due on Thursday 07 December.

We have spent the last two weeks looking at shape.

For Year 1, naming common 2D and 3D shapes. For example, triangle, square, octagon, cube, sphere and pyramid.

For year 2, naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes. For example, knowing that a square has 4 sides and 4 corners, a cube has 6 faces (all of which are square), 8 vertices and 12 edges and a pyramid has 5 faces (4 triangle, 1 square), 5 vertices and 8 edges.

A visit from a vicar

This week in Year 1 and 2, we were lucky enough to have a visit from Revd. Stroma, from St James’ church,  as part of our Identity week.

We’re looking at the different types of identity that we have, both as an individual and as a school. One of our school identities that we have is that our church identity. We are lucky to have close links with our local church St James’.

The children enjoyed the session, looking at items from  the church that make up part of the church’s identity. The children could retell lots of interesting facts.

  • “We learnt about things about God and Jesus.” – McKenzie
  • “We learnt about festivals and celebrations in the church.” – Fleur
  • “Revd. Stroma told us about the stoles, when they wear them and why they wear them.” –  Daisy-Mae
  • “Yesterday, we learnt about the things that are in the church like the white, pink and blue candles.” –  Nicholas
