Staying Safe: Dog’s Trust

This afternoon, a visit from the Dog’s Trust meant that we learned loads about how to stay safe around dogs.

We talked about what we should do if there was a dog we wanted to stroke. It’s important to always ask the owner permission to stroke their dog and to stroke the dog gently – we practised this with Peg the dog. Thankfully, Peg was only a cuddly toy – Mrs Valentine is super scared of dogs!

In addition, we were told what to do if a dog came up to us who was over-excited. We had to stand with our arms across our chest, looking up to the sky – this makes us really boring and the over excited dog will soon get bored of us!

Be sure to ask your child about how we can stay safe around dogs!

Staying Safe: Road Safety

This morning, the road safety team from Leeds City Council came to visit us to tell us all about crossing roads safely and how important it is to always wear a seat belt.

It was great to see that so many of the children already knew lots of ways to stay safe on the roads – nice one, Foundation and Y1 & 2!

We thought about the different vehicles that use a road.
We talked about the importance of crossing a road at a safe place and always with an adult. Noah said it was a good idea to hold hands with the adult you were crossing the road with – great advice!

 

EasyPeasy

Image result for easy peasyIt’s great to see so many parents engaging with the activities with Easy Peasy.  Mrs Beesley, Mrs Allen-Kelly and I monitor the use of this so it’s lovely to see the learning that goes on at home!

The Hundred Decker Bus

Check out our own ‘Hundred Decker Bus’ we made this week!

As part of our topic on Transport, we were inspired by Mike Smith’s The Hundred Decker Bus so we decided to create our own.

OK – it doesn’t quite have one hundred decks (18 to be precise) but there is one deck for each member of Foundation! Be sure to come into our classroom to have a closer look so that you can quiz your child about their deck of the bus. We had some fab ideas: a deck with a swimming pool, a deck with a burger bar and a deck with rainbow!

Next week is sure to be a very busy one as we join the rest of the school in Safety Week. We’ll be learning about road safety with the NSPCC, how to approach dogs with a visit from the Dog’s Trust and all about fire safety when Wetherby Fire Station come to visit on Friday afternoon.

Year 1/2 Library visit

We had an exciting afternoon in year 1/2. Our class visited Wetherby Library today and we returned our books. We each chose 2 books that we would like to read. Eliza rushed straight over to the history section to find her perfect book.

She said, “I love history, so I know that I’ll love this one. It’s about 100 women who changed history.”

Jack found a lovely poetry book as he shared that he “loves reading rhymes”.

We are looking forward to reading all of our new books.

Chance to Shine Cricket

Over the last few weeks, Tom from Yorkshire Country Cricket has been coming in every Wednesday to help develop our cricket skills. We have played some fast-paced and fun games as well as working on our batting, fielding, bowling and teamwork skills. All the while we have also been focusing on: being a team player; showing resilience and perseverance; and showing respect to our fellow players.

The cricket coaching is part of the Chance to Shine movement allowing young children to play and learn through cricket. A letter will shortly be coming home about opportunities to play cricket in the local community along with the All Stars Cricket Coaching later in the year.

This would be a great opportunity for children to ensure they are getting their 60 minutes of activity each day.

Welcome to the Chocolate Room

What a day yesterday was! After finding the last golden ticket and meeting Mr Wonka, we – along with Charlie and the four awful brats – found ourselves outside the Chocolate Room.

The hall had been transformed and filled with contraptions from Mr Wonka’s imagination to make his most wonderful sweets and chocolate. We let our imaginations run wild as to what everything could be and what it might smell, taste, or even sound like.

We then went back and wrote all about our experiences in the chocolate room. The pieces of work and descriptions that came out were simply amazing. We can’t wait to see what other surprises await in Mr Wonka’s factory.

 

Living and Learning: I know how to make things better

The children all brought in some fantastic responses to the creative homework about making things better. We had posters about how to be a good friend, a game about making good choices, a guide to how to say sorry, and a game based on friendship.

Living and Learning: I know what a drug is.

Our Living and Learning statement this week is ‘I know what a drug is’.
We thought about all the different types of drugs people may put into their bodies.
We noticed there were many types of drugs that can be helpful if people are ill. Everyone agreed that even these drugs, such as paracetamol and Calpol need to be taken in the correct amounts and with care.
There was lots of grown up discussion about why people may put other more harmful drugs into their bodies.

“If you take too much of something it will damage your body but a little bit might help it”. Cohen

Using a life sized body outline we began to think about how different types of drugs affect the different parts of the body-including the mind and how people feel.
We shall be continuing this important topic next week during our Living and Learning session.

Living and Learning: I know what a drug is.

Our Living and Learning statement this week is ‘I know what a drug is’.

We talked about what a drug is and then discussed lots of things that go into our bodies. They were added to the outline of a person and then as a class we chose one to discuss. We talked about injections and whether they make us feel good. We decided that injections given by a doctor or nurse don’t feel good but they are good for us because they stop us getting ill. In pairs, the children were given pictures of things that go into our body and had to discuss whether they are good or bad (harmful) for our bodies. We then discussed the answers as a class.
