Baking Bread

Posted on Thursday 20 September 2018 by Miss Beatson

Today, we’ve been busy baking bread.

  • “It tasted delicious and it had a very soft texture.”
  • “Mine was a bit salty, I think I added too much!”
  • “I gave it a 7/10. It needed less salt.”

Living and Learning: I can take a safe risk and be responsible

Posted on Wednesday 19 September 2018 by Mr Roundtree

In our Living and Learning session, we talked about taking safe risks and taking responsibility for your own learning. We discussed what responsibility is and decided that when you are responsible for something it is up to you to make sure it happens.
Jack told us that it is the children’s own responsibility to make sure that they take their things to school, not their mum’s responsibility.  Louie told us that each child is responsible for their writing – we discussed this and decided that children are responsible for making their writing neat and making sure they write enough. Leah told us each child is responsible for bringing their PE Kit. When asked about homework, Ava said when the teacher asks you to do it you have to do it. We decided together that when the teacher gives you homework it is your responsibility to make sure you do it.
We talked about risks and what kind of risks are safe and what kind of risks are not safe. We decided as a class that it is safe to put your hand up in class and have a go at answering a question. We also decided it is safe to try new activities and to try to read a book that looks tricky. Talking about doing work you are not sure you can do Willow told us, “If you don’t know how to do it, you can try it and take a risk.”

Apple pressing

Posted on Tuesday 18 September 2018 by Miss Beatson

We are so lucky to have delicious apples growing in our very own playground. This week, we’ve used the fallen apples to make our very own apple juice using a fruit press. We also looked at the variety of apples that grow around the world to link with our topic.

Making Moves!

Posted on Saturday 15 September 2018 by Mrs Allen-Kelly

Here in Foundation, one of the prime areas of learning is physical development.

The learning in this area focuses on a child’s independence with regards to their own health and safety and has important links to other areas of learning. Here are just a few  of the lovely examples from this week of how physical development is supported and enjoyed in our classroom and outdoor area:

Listening to music, playing instruments and dancing in the Movement Play area. Strengthens muscles and develops balance and co-ordination. Has links to Expressive Arts.
Using fine motor skills to pick up small loose-parts, when creating a transient art picture. Strengthens finger muscles. Has links to Expressive Arts and having our own ideas.
Practising a range of ball games to strengthen muscles and develop co-ordination and agility.
Climbing and jumping from the half-tyre. Strengthens muscles and develops co-ordination. Has links to perseverance and managing safe risks.

In the classroom we have our fiddly fingers, malleable (dough table) and mark-making spaces. These all focus on using small movements that strengthen the muscles of the wrists, hands and fingers.

Well done, Foundation- another busy week with great examples of independent learning.

Fantastic Creative Homework

This week, year 1 and 2 were given the creative homework task: I can show what I know about a country. They could choose any country they wished and present this in any way. Here are a few of our creative homework with a wide variety of countries represented.

Living and Learning: to be ready and to respond

Posted on Friday 14 September 2018 by Mr Roundtree

This week our living and learning statement is “I can I am ready to learn and I can respond to feedback“.

We talked about how we can show we are ready to learn.

Jack said, “We need to look at the teacher, have your book out and get a pencil ready.”

Dexter said, “We follow instructions.”

Willow said, “We are ready by listening, looking at the teacher and doing whatever they ask you to do.”

We talked about feedback and how we use it to know what we did well and how to improve. The things that help us improve are our next steps in our books.

14 September 2018

We’ve had yet another busy week in Year 3/4. We’re still continuing our work on place value and representing number in maths. We’ve also been brushing up on our skills of using verbs and adverbs in English – both of which are going well.

However, the thing that has most excited the children this week was our first brass instruments music lessons. Yes, it was noisy! Yes, it was exciting – and yes, everybody loved it! The lesson will take place all term and we’ll hopefully be able to bring you all a performance of some sort.

We also noticed that the tree outside our classroom had produced a huge windfall of apples. So, we’ve collected the good ones and we’ll be making some apple-based recipes next week. Then we’ll look what food other countries around the world produce for us to enjoy.
