ible and able word endings

What’s the rule?

When we cannot identify a root word, we most commonly add ible, eg legible. When you can identify the root word this means that you are able to, therefore we add able. Eg forgivable means you are able to forgive.

Sort these word beginnings to the correct ible or able ending. Add more examples if you can think of any.

This week’s homework is creative.

Competition Time!

This week, we have been really lucky to have Mat from Leeds United Foundation visit school. He spoke to us about the Leeds United values: family, pride, innovation, ambition and graft.

For homework, I would like you to create a poster that shows how these values relate to our Christian values: friendship, love, perseverance, honesty, forgiveness and peace and our school vision which is to be a happy and healthy place to achieve and believe.

The posters will be sent to Mat, who will judge the poster and the winner will receive a family ticket to go and watch Leeds United V Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday 11 January 2020!

Community Week

We’ve had a busy and exciting week at St James’, learning all about community. We’ve thought about our school community, local community and wider community. Throughout the week, we’ve had lots of visitors and activities taking place. Some of these included Leeds United Foundation who spoke to us about how they support the community and how their values link with our own school values and vision; Wetherby in Bloom and Friends of Sandringham explained to us about the fantastic volunteer work that helps our local community; Salvation Army told us about the work they do to help people around the world and in our local community; Year 3 went litter picking at the local park to help keep Wetherby tidy; Year 5/6 had a DT lesson at Wetherby High School; Safer School Officer; Fire Service and much more. Thank you to all the children who brought in photographs of themselves in the local area and those who brought in an item for identity day.

Music day

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed a whole day of music, where they all learnt how to play some basic chords on the guitar and keyboard. By the end of the day, they played six well-known songs to the rest of the school. It was fantastic to see the focus and concentration the children had when playing the songs and how well they all played together as a group. Thank you to Fran and Sarah from Artforms, who ran the day.

Watch us while we work

We recently invited parents and carers into school to watch some fantastic learning in action! We had some wonderful feedback:

“I enjoyed seeing how the children are taught so I can use the same methods to help at home.”

“I liked how the lesson wasn’t just sat but the children got up and moved around.”

“Lovely positive encouragement from the lovely teachers.”

Our next watch us while we work session will be on Wednesday 22 January, 9am-10am.

Our visit from Councillor Lamb

This week, we had a visit from Councillor Lamb, who spoke to us about the planned housing developments around Wetherby. This is part of our geography topic: Where in the world am I? We looked at some huge maps of the local area, which clearly showed the places where housing has been proposed. The children asked some great questions about the negative and positive impact of the new housing developments and they have gathered lots of information for them to write a balanced argument in English.

Living and Learning: Body Image

At the end of last year, the pupils in Year 5 and 6 completed a My School My Health survey and one of the findings from the survey was how many of us have negative feelings around our own body image. This week, we had a Dove workshop all about self-esteem and body image. With many unrealistic images in the media and on social media, it’s important to explore our feelings and thoughts around this issue.

This is what some of the children had to say after the workshop:

“I will remind my friends not to say “I want to be like them,” but I will tell them to be themselves.”

“I will look at pictures and see how much editing/work they have done to this image. I need to say to myself that they are fake and don’t change yourself.”

“I pledge to think about myself in a better way and not compare myself to others.”

“I will remind people that we need to respect ourselves and others. I will disagree to negative comments on social media. “
