Maths: angles
Year 6: angles in a triangle
How did you get on with the triangle investigation yesterday? All the angles should have fitted on a straight line because all angles in a triangle total 180 degrees. Here is today’s activity and challenge.
Reading: fact and opinion
First of all, use this BBC Bitesize guide to remind you of the difference between facts and opinions.
Now, open up the FirstNews paper and go to page 4: it’s called 20 things to know and tell. Read the article and then answer these questions.
Challenge: I would like you to tell us your opinion about any article from this week’s FirstNews. I want you to email me with your views. You should tell me the article you’ve read and what you think about it. However, in your explanation, I’d like you to include some facts, too. You can show me that you know these are facts by underlining or writing them in bold. I can’t wait to see what you guys think of the articles – please email your response to nataliebeatson@spherefederation.org
Music: BBC Bitesize singing with feeling
Here’s something slightly different for your home learning. Watch the videos and complete activity one and two. Send me the notes about your favourite song so I can share them with the rest of the class on the class news.
Challenge: discuss your favourite song with someone in your family. Compare it to their favourite song. What are the similarities and differences?

Happy Friday everyone and Happy May Day too.
See if you can write all your spellings from memory today? You could do the same for times tables too. Remember to read as well.
Maths
Count how much is in each purse. Use your knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to help.
Challenges : 1. Write the calculations to match (eg 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 or Y2s could write the multiplication 4 x 2 = 8).
2. Draw some purses of your own and work out how much is in each.

Watch the video from Miss Harker all about nouns.
You might want to get ready to pause it at some points to do the activities in your home learning books.
Topic – Geography
Draw a compass in your home learning book. Add the points of the compass: north, east, south and west.
Challenge: Can you think of a silly rhyme to help you remember the points of the compass? Miss Harker uses ‘never eat shredded wheat!’ (north, east, south and west).

Choose 2 toys at a time and write the calculations of how much they would cost altogether. Remember to write p after the numerals eg 2p + 10p = 12p
Challenge: Choose 3 or more toys, write the calculation and find out how much they cost altogether. Draw part whole models to match the calculations.

Command sentences are used when you are telling someone to do something.
Commands usually start with an imperative verb, also known as a ‘bossy verb’, because they tell someone to do something. You should also use commands when you are writing instructions telling someone how to do something.
Read the commands below.
Fetch me some biscuits.
Tidy your bedroom.
Run as fast as you can.

Read the text ‘Adrenaline Towers’ and then answer the questions.
Writing: parenthesis
Parentheses
Brackets, dashes and commas indicate parentheses (parentheses is the plural of parenthesis).
Parenthesis is a word or clause inserted into a text as an afterthought (or as extra information).
A pair of brackets, commas or dashes can be used to enclose the extra information or afterthought.
Complete the BBC Bitesize lesson all about how to use brackets, dashes and commas to indicate parenthesis.

Maths: angles
Year 6: angles around a point
Today’s task is to calculate missing angles around a point. Remember – angles around a point have a total 360 degrees.
Reading: summarising
When you summarise, you shorten a piece of text and say/write the main, important points.
There are many technique variations for summarising information, such as mind maps, bullet points or story retelling. These are used to discern the who, what, where and when from a piece of text.
For example:
- Who/What – The Tudor family reign.
- When – 1485 to 1603.
- Where – England and Wales
Complete this activity.
You will need a copy of the First News paper again.
Challenge: Go on to the BBC Sport website (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport), or a different age-appropriate website, and choose an article to read. Once you’ve read it, summarise the article in 20 words. Then, try again in 10 words. After that, have a go at summarising in 5 words. Finally, summarise the article in 1 word.

Reading: Today’s task is a reading comprehension. Read through the text and answer the questions. (The answers are on the second sheet.)
Writing: Last week, we watched the video of the impala escaping from the leopard. (You could always watch it again if you want to!) This week, we have some pictures of some other animals escaping from their predators. Choose one of the pictures, or use your own ideas, to answer the questions about an attack and escape (just like you did last week with the video.) Can you use your notes to retell the story of the narrow escape? You may want to write some sentences that you can use tomorrow when we will write the story of the narrow escape.

Good morning everyone!
Remember to read and work on spellings/times tables today.
Maths
Play shops at home by making some of your own price tags (just using scraps of paper or cardboard from your recycling). Write a different amount on each price tag all the way up to 20p (or more if you want a challenge). You could buy and sell fruit, vegetables, clothes or toys (just pretending, of course, and remember to put everything back once you’ve used it).
How many different ways can you make the amount on the price tag? Your parents, brother, sister, pets or teddies might like to join in with playing shops too?
Challenge : Make a price list, signs and write receipts for your shop.
Reading – Statements

Statements are the most common type of sentence. They tell the reader a fact or idea about a single topic. They must always end in punctuation, usually a full stop.

Follow the link to watch a selection of Go Jetters videos all about some of the UK’s most significant landmarks. What is a landmark? Can you think of any landmarks in Leeds?
After watching, can you locate all the landmarks on a map?
Challenges : 1. Choose one of the four landmarks. 2. Sketch or paint and label the landmark. 3. Write sentences describing the landmarks.

Hola everyone! Here are your tasks for today.
Maths
Write the amounts of money that are in each jar counting in 2s, 5s or 10s. Remember to use a ‘p’ after the numerals eg 20p.
Challenge: Draw around some 2p, 5p and 10p coins in your home learning book. Count in 2s, 5s or 10s to work out the total amount that you have made.
Reading – Questions
Watch the first short video about questions on BBC Bitesize Daily Lessons. Then, if you can, there are 2 follow up activities all about The Magic Faraway Tree, which was our much-loved class novel earlier in the year.

Have a read of the full newspaper. Find an article you like and create your own quiz for a friend / someone in your family to do. You could write questions down or you could do it as a video.
Geography: Where are the major cities of the UK?
This is a recap lesson. Have a go at learning all the major cities in the UK. Challenge your parents to identify as many as they can in a row. Alternatively, take it in turns until one person doesn’t know. Before challenging someone else, study the map yourself so you become an expert.
